Diffusionskonstante, often denoted D and also called the diffusion coefficient, is a parameter that quantifies the rate at which particles spread due to diffusion. In a homogeneous, isotropic medium, Fick's first law expresses the diffusive flux J as proportional to the negative concentration gradient: J = -D ∇c. If the medium is anisotropic, D becomes a second-order tensor and diffusion is described by ∂c/∂t = ∇·(D ∇c). For constant D, this reduces to the diffusion equation ∂c/∂t = D ∇^2 c.
