Dieselsähkömoottori refers to a diesel-electric drivetrain, a system used in various vehicles such as trains, buses, and some ships. Instead of directly powering the wheels or propellers with the diesel engine, the engine's rotational energy is converted into electrical energy by a generator. This electrical energy then powers electric motors, which in turn drive the vehicle's propulsion system.

This configuration offers several advantages. The diesel engine can operate at its most efficient speed, regardless of the vehicle's speed, leading to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. The electrical transmission allows for smoother acceleration and deceleration, as the power delivery is more controlled. Furthermore, the diesel engine and the electric motors can be located independently, providing greater design flexibility for the vehicle.

Diesel-electric systems are particularly common in locomotives, where they enable powerful and efficient traction. In buses, they contribute to quieter operation and smoother rides, especially in urban environments. The complexity of the system, involving both a diesel engine and electrical components, can be a disadvantage in terms of initial cost and maintenance compared to purely mechanical drivetrains.
