Dibër

Dibër is a region and a former administrative district in northeastern Albania, bordering North Macedonia to the east. It is situated in the upper valley of the Drin River, surrounded by mountains, including the Korab massif, the highest peak in Albania. The region is known for its natural beauty, characterized by rugged terrain, forests, and alpine meadows.

Historically, Dibër has been a significant cultural and economic center. The city of Dibër, the former district capital, is one of the oldest settlements in Albania. The area has a rich history, with evidence of Illyrian, Roman, and Ottoman presence. The local economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry. More recently, tourism has begun to develop, attracted by the scenic landscapes and opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and mountaineering.

The population of Dibër is primarily Albanian, with a notable ethnic Macedonian minority in some border areas. The region has a distinct cultural heritage, reflected in its folk traditions, music, and cuisine. The Dibër region is also known for its thermal springs, particularly in the city of Dibër, which attract visitors seeking therapeutic benefits.

In 2015, as part of a major administrative reform in Albania, the former Dibër District was dissolved and its territory was reorganized into the new Dibër Municipality. However, the term "Dibër" continues to be used to refer to the geographical region and its cultural identity. The region's strategic location and natural resources have shaped its past and continue to influence its development.
