Diammonium phosphate (DAP) is a widely used phosphate fertilizer with the chemical formula (NH4)2HPO4. It is produced by reacting phosphoric acid with ammonia, and the resulting product is typically crystallized, dried, and granulated or prilled for distribution. DAP is a white to colorless crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water.

Typical fertilizer grade of DAP is 18-46-0, meaning about 18% nitrogen (N) and 46% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5), with no potassium (K2O). The nitrogen and phosphorus content make DAP a balanced starter fertilizer that supports early root development and establishment of crops such as cereals, corn, and legumes. It is often used in soil with adequate moisture and is common in blends to adjust N-P ratios in a field.

Production notes: In industry, phosphoric acid reacts with ammonia gas or aqueous ammonia to form diammonium phosphate, which is crystallized and then processed into granular or prilled forms suitable for handling and application.

Handling and safety: DAP is hygroscopic and can be an irritant to skin and eyes. It should be handled with appropriate protective equipment, kept away from moisture, and stored in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from incompatible materials. As with all phosphorus fertilizers, excessive application can contribute to phosphorus runoff and eutrophication of water bodies.
