Dialectsfor

Dialectsfor is a hypothetical open data framework designed to document and interlink regional and social varieties of languages. The project aims to provide interoperable representations of dialect features—phonological, lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic—and to connect these features to standard language forms. By organizing dialects in a structured, queryable format, Dialectsfor supports cross-linguistic research, language technology development, and educational materials.

The data model envisions a graph- or ontology-based structure in which dialect nodes represent named varieties or continua, feature nodes capture linguistic properties, and relation edges encode connections such as “is variant of,” “influenced by,” or “co-occurs with.” Metadata includes geographic region, speaker population, sociolinguistic status, time frame, and data provenance. Features may be recorded as presence/absence, frequency, or descriptive inventories. The framework emphasizes openness and license compatibility to enable reuse.

Data are gathered from fieldwork, corpora, existing descriptions, and crowd-sourced contributions, with quality control through peer review and provenance tracking. Privacy and consent considerations are addressed for communities involved.

Applications span natural language processing, speech recognition, language education, and sociolinguistic analysis. By providing a shared reference, Dialectsfor can facilitate comparisons across languages, support rehabilitation of endangered dialects, and improve language technologies for diverse speaker communities.
