Dezhnev
Dezhnev is a surname of Russian origin. It is most notably associated with Semyon Dezhnev, a 17th-century Russian explorer who is credited with being the first European to navigate the Bering Strait. He sailed from the Arctic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean in 1648, proving that Asia and North America were not connected at that point. His voyage predated Vitus Bering's by nearly eighty years. Dezhnev's expedition was primarily focused on fur trading and establishing new routes for the Russian Empire. Despite the significance of his achievement, his discoveries were not widely known in Europe until much later due to poor record-keeping and communication at the time. The Bering Strait was named after Bering, but there have been efforts to recognize Dezhnev's earlier passage. The name Dezhnev can also refer to geographical locations in Russia, such as Cape Dezhnev, the easternmost point of mainland Asia, also named in his honor.
