Deviationen

Deviationen is a term used to refer to multiple deviations, typically in the context of statistics, measurement, and data analysis. In this sense, a deviation is the difference between an observed value and a reference value, such as a target, mean, or specification. Deviationen summarize how far data points lie from the chosen reference and help assess accuracy, precision, and dispersion within a dataset.

Common types of deviationen include signed deviations and absolute deviations. Signed deviations retain direction, showing whether observations are above or below the reference. Absolute deviations discard direction and reflect only the magnitude of the difference. When aggregating deviationen, several standard metrics are used. Variance and standard deviation are based on squared deviations, while the mean absolute deviation uses the average of absolute deviations. These measures come in population and sample forms, with adjustments to the divisor (n or n−1) depending on whether the data describe the entire population or a sample.

Calculation basics can be described with a reference value r and observations x1, x2, ..., xn. The signed deviation for observation i is di = xi − r. The squared deviation is di², and the absolute deviation is |di|. The mean of squared deviations yields the variance; the square root of the variance gives the standard deviation. The mean absolute deviation is the average of |di|. These calculations underpin quality control, hypothesis testing, and uncertainty analysis.

Applications of deviationen span quality assurance, experimental science, finance, and data analytics. They help identify bias, inconsistency, and variability, and they support comparisons across datasets or time periods.
