Desulfuratsiooni is a chemical process used to remove sulfur compounds from various substances, most notably from fossil fuels like petroleum and natural gas. This removal is crucial for several reasons. Sulfur impurities can lead to the formation of sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide when fuels are burned, which are major contributors to acid rain and air pollution. Furthermore, sulfur compounds can poison catalysts used in industrial processes, reducing their efficiency and lifespan.

The most common method for desulfurizing fuels is hydrodesulfurization (HDS). In HDS, the sulfur-containing compounds in the fuel react with hydrogen gas at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst, typically cobalt-molybdenum or nickel-molybdenum supported on alumina. This reaction converts the organic sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrocarbons. The hydrogen sulfide is then removed from the hydrocarbon stream, often by absorption into a liquid solvent or by conversion to elemental sulfur through processes like the Claus process.

Other desulfurization techniques exist, including oxidative desulfurization and bio-desulfurization, which employ different chemical or biological agents to achieve sulfur removal. The specific method chosen depends on the type of fuel, the concentration and nature of the sulfur compounds, and economic considerations.
