Adsorption, conversely, is the accumulation of atoms, ions, or molecules from a gas, liquid, or dissolved solid onto a surface. This process involves attractive forces between the adsorbate (the substance being adsorbed) and the adsorbent (the surface). Adsorption can be physical (physisorption), driven by weak van der Waals forces, or chemical (chemisorption), involving the formation of chemical bonds.
