Desmolization

Desmolization is a term encountered infrequently in scientific literature and is not part of standard nomenclature in chemistry, biochemistry, or cell biology. When used, it is typically a descriptive neologism indicating the removal of bonds or breaking molecular connections within a material or system. Formed from desmos (Greek for bond) and the suffix -ization, the word signals a process transformation, but its definition is context dependent.

In polymer science, materials engineering, or supramolecular chemistry, some authors employ desmolization to refer to bond cleavage, debonding at interfaces, or disassembly of assemblies. However, because it is not standardized, many researchers instead use established terms such as bond cleavage, bond dissociation, debonding, desolvation, or desulfonation to avoid ambiguity.

In biology and medicine, there is no accepted meaning for desmolization; if encountered in texts related to cell junctions, it is likely a nonstandard usage, potentially referring to disruption of desmosomes (cell–cell attachments) but not a recognized nomenclature.
