Designhistorie, or design history, is the scholarly study of the ways designed objects and environments come into being, circulate, and shape life. It examines graphic, product, architectural, fashion, and interaction design, and investigates how material form intersects with technology, economy, politics, and culture. The field considers producers, users, and institutions, as well as the social meanings and aesthetic values attached to design.

Historically, design history develops alongside industrialization and urban modernity. Movements such as the Arts and Crafts movement, the Bauhaus, and modernist design redefined the relationship between craft and mass production, function and form. After World War II, consumer culture and corporate design fostered international styles, while later critical approaches questioned universal design rules and highlighted diversity, gender, and postcolonial perspectives.

The late 20th and 21st centuries brought digital design, user experience, sustainability, and globalization to the foreground, expanding the field to include software, services, and experience design.

Scholarly methods combine archival research, visual and material culture analysis, and cross-disciplinary theory from art history, sociology, anthropology, and design practice. Debates in design history address authorship and collaboration, the designer's role in society, and the ethical implications of design choices.

Designhistorie is taught in art and design curricula, museums curate design histories through exhibitions, and scholars contribute to curating, policy, and professional practice. It aims to illuminate how design reflects and shapes human needs, identities, and values across time and space.
