Descemetféle

Descemetféle is a term that has been used historically to refer to conditions affecting Descemet's membrane, a layer of the cornea. Descemet's membrane is the posterior limiting lamina of the cornea, located between the corneal stroma and the corneal endothelium. It is a transparent, acellular sheet that plays a crucial role in maintaining corneal clarity and hydration.

Diseases or conditions that involve abnormalities or damage to Descemet's membrane have sometimes been grouped under this umbrella term. Examples of such conditions include congenital corneal opacities where Descemet's membrane may be dysplastic or malformed, or various forms of corneal dystrophies that affect the posterior layers of the cornea. Trauma to the eye can also cause breaks or detachments in Descemet's membrane, leading to symptoms such as blurred vision or edema. In surgical procedures like penetrating keratoplasty, the health and integrity of Descemet's membrane are critical for successful graft integration and visual outcome. Modern ophthalmology tends to use more specific diagnostic terms for these conditions rather than the broader historical descriptor.
