Dersu
Dersu Uzala is the central figure in the travelogue Dersu Uzala by Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, first published in 1923. Dersu was a Nanai hunter who accompanied Arsenyev on expeditions across the Sikhote-Alin mountain region in the Russian Far East during the early 20th century, notably in the years around 1902 to 1907. The work combines ethnographic observation with detailed accounts of exploration, survival in the taiga, and encounters with Indigenous life, while examining themes of friendship, nature, and the pressures of modernization.
