Derivaatiotoiminnoista, or derivative functions in English, are a fundamental concept in calculus. A derivative measures the rate at which a function's output changes with respect to its input. Geometrically, the derivative of a function at a point represents the slope of the tangent line to the function's graph at that point. This tells us how steep the graph is at that specific location.

The process of finding a derivative is called differentiation. It is typically defined using a limit. For a function f(x), its derivative, denoted as f'(x) or dy/dx, is found by the limit of the difference quotient as the change in x approaches zero: lim (h->0) [f(x+h) - f(x)] / h. This formula captures the instantaneous rate of change.

Derivatives have wide-ranging applications across various fields. In physics, they are used to describe velocity (the derivative of position with respect to time) and acceleration (the derivative of velocity with respect to time). In economics, derivatives help analyze marginal cost and marginal revenue. Optimization problems, finding maximum or minimum values of functions, heavily rely on derivatives. Understanding derivative functions is crucial for analyzing the behavior of functions and modeling real-world phenomena.
