Dentinoberflächen

Dentinoberflächen refers to the various surfaces of dentin, the hard tissue that makes up the bulk of a tooth, located beneath the enamel and cementum. These surfaces play a crucial role in tooth structure, sensitivity, and dental treatments.

There are several types of dentin surfaces encountered in dentistry. The outermost layer of dentin, exposed when enamel is lost or in the root surface, is often referred to as the "pulpal wall" when viewed from the pulp chamber or as the "dentinoenamel junction" (DEJ) on the crown and the "dentinocemental junction" (DCJ) on the root. When dentin is prepared for dental restorations, such as during cavity preparation, new surfaces are created. These prepared dentin surfaces are characterized by the presence of dentinal tubules, which are microscopic channels extending from the pulp to the DEJ/DCJ.

The exposed dentinal tubules are a primary cause of tooth sensitivity. When stimuli like temperature changes, sweet or acidic foods, or mechanical irritation reach these tubules, they can trigger a response in the nerve endings within the pulp. This is why many dental treatments aim to seal or protect these surfaces.

In restorative dentistry, the interaction between filling materials and dentin surfaces is critical for achieving durable and successful restorations. Adhesives are used to bond restorative materials to dentin, and their effectiveness depends on the proper preparation and conditioning of the dentin surface. Understanding the morphology and properties of dentinoberflächen is therefore fundamental for diagnosing dental conditions and planning effective treatments.
