Denasalized

Denasalized refers to a speech sound that has lost its nasal quality. Nasal sounds, like the 'm' in "man" or 'n' in "no", are produced with the velum lowered, allowing air to pass through the nose. When a sound is denasalized, the velum is raised, blocking the nasal passage and preventing air from escaping through the nose. This results in the sound being produced more like its oral counterpart.

For instance, a denasalized 'm' would sound more like a 'b' or 'p', and a denasalized 'n' would sound closer to a 'd' or 't'. This change can occur in various contexts, including certain speech impediments, dialectal variations, or even as a temporary phenomenon due to a blocked nasal passage, such as during a cold. In phonetics, denasalization is a common process observed in language acquisition and change. It can be a sign of developing speech patterns in children or a characteristic feature of certain accents. The term is primarily used in linguistics and speech pathology to describe this specific phonetic modification.
