Demosaikointimenetelmä, often referred to as demosaicing or debayering, is a crucial step in digital image processing, particularly for images captured by single-chip image sensors. These sensors, commonly found in digital cameras and camcorders, use a color filter array (CFA) over their pixels. The most prevalent CFA is the Bayer filter, which arranges red, green, and blue filters in a specific pattern, typically a 2x2 repeating unit. Each pixel under the filter only records the intensity of one primary color (red, green, or blue).

The demosaicing algorithm's purpose is to reconstruct a full-color image from this mosaic of single-color pixel values. It interpolates the missing color information for each pixel based on the values of its neighboring pixels. Various algorithms exist, each with different approaches to this interpolation. Simple methods might use basic averaging, while more advanced techniques employ spatial or chromatic correlation to achieve higher image quality.

The effectiveness of a demosaicing algorithm directly impacts the final image's color accuracy, detail rendition, and the presence of artifacts like color aliasing or jagged edges. The choice of algorithm often involves a trade-off between computational complexity and the quality of the reconstructed image. Modern digital imaging systems employ sophisticated demosaicing techniques to ensure that the captured light information is translated into a visually appealing and accurate representation of the scene.
