Degradeäänenlaatu, a Finnish term, translates to "degraded sound quality" in English. It refers to a noticeable reduction in the fidelity or clarity of an audio signal. This can manifest in various ways, such as the presence of static, crackling, distortion, muffling, or a general lack of crispness. The phenomenon can occur across a wide range of audio reproduction systems, from consumer electronics like headphones and speakers to professional audio equipment and broadcasting systems.

Several factors can contribute to degraded sound quality. In analog systems, these might include physical wear and tear on media like vinyl records or magnetic tape, interference from electromagnetic sources, or faulty wiring and connectors. In digital audio, degradation can arise from issues such as low bitrates in compressed audio files (e.g., heavily compressed MP3s), data corruption during transmission or storage, or imperfections in digital-to-analog converters (DACs) or analog-to-digital converters (ADCs).
