Datahoogte

Datahoogte is a Dutch term used in data management and geospatial analysis to denote the height dimension of a dataset. It describes the vertical axis of a data structure that is otherwise defined by breedte (width) and diepte (depth). In many contexts the height axis is referred to as the Z-dimension or the elevation axis. In geospatial analysis, datahoogte usually represents elevation above a reference surface, captured as an attribute per cell in a raster dataset or as a coordinate in a 3D point cloud. Heights are typically expressed in meters above a vertical datum such as the ellipsoid or geoid.

Common data forms include digital elevation models (DEMs), digital surface models (DSMs), heightmaps, LiDAR point clouds, and volumetric data cubes stored in formats like NetCDF or HDF5. The height information enables three-dimensional visualization, terrain analysis, hydrology, and urban planning. Important considerations include the vertical datum and units, vertical accuracy, and alignment with other layers. When combining data from different sources, height values may require conversion or correction to a common datum.
