Dashin

DASHin is a distributed data streaming and processing framework and protocol designed to enable interoperable, edge-aware data exchange across heterogeneous networks. It integrates data streams, control messages, and compute tasks into programmable channels that can span data centers, clouds, and edge devices.

The project originated from a joint industry-academic initiative in 2023 and published its first public draft specification in 2024 by the DASHin Consortium. It positions itself as a complementary layer to traditional streaming protocols, focusing on data exchange, resource discovery, and near-edge computation.

Architecture comprises several core elements: the DASHin Core, a network layer for routing and multiplexing; the DASHin Registry for resource discovery and policy management; and DASHin Agents that operate at endpoints to host services and collect data. The data model uses resources such as channels, datasets, and services. The design emphasizes extensibility, security, and cross-domain interoperability.

Key features include low-latency adaptive routing, policy-driven quality-of-service, programmable data adapters for storage and compute, and end-to-end security with identity management and encryption. It supports both push and pull communication patterns and aims to enable deterministic performance in mixed-network environments.

Use cases span content delivery networks, live media streaming, telemetry and sensor networks, collaborative analytics, and cross-organization data sharing where data sovereignty and near-real-time processing are important.

Governance and licensing are open: reference implementations are released under permissive licenses, and ongoing development is coordinated by the DASHin Alliance through public drafts and community forums.
