Dahomeyan

Dahomeyan refers to anything relating to the historical Kingdom of Dahomey, which existed in West Africa from the early 17th century to the late 19th century. This kingdom was located in what is now the modern-day Republic of Benin. The people of Dahomey, known as the Fon, developed a complex and highly centralized state.

The kingdom was known for its powerful military, including a female elite fighting corps often referred to as the "Amazons of Dahomey." Dahomey was a major player in the transatlantic slave trade for centuries, exporting large numbers of enslaved people. The economy was largely based on agriculture, with palm oil and other cash crops becoming increasingly important.

Dahomeyan society was hierarchical, with a divine king at its apex. The kingdom had a rich tradition of art, including intricate carvings, bronzes, and vibrant textiles, often depicting historical events, religious figures, and the power of the monarchy.
