Dagsljósbreytinga, a term originating from Icelandic, refers to the phenomenon of changes in daylight hours throughout the year. This is a direct consequence of Earth's axial tilt and its orbit around the Sun. As the Earth revolves around the Sun, different parts of the planet receive varying amounts of direct sunlight due to the tilt of its axis, which is approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbital plane.

During the summer months in a particular hemisphere, that hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, resulting in longer days and shorter nights. Conversely, during winter, the same hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, leading to shorter days and longer nights. The equinoxes, occurring in spring and autumn, mark periods when both hemispheres receive roughly equal amounts of sunlight, resulting in nearly equal day and night lengths.

The magnitude of dagsljósbreytinga varies with latitude. Closer to the equator, the difference between the longest and shortest days is minimal. However, as one moves towards the poles, this variation becomes much more pronounced. In the polar regions, during the summer solstice, there can be periods of continuous daylight (midnight sun), while during the winter solstice, there can be periods of continuous darkness (polar night).
