Dacryography

Dacryography is a medical imaging technique used to visualize and assess the tear drainage system, also known as the lacrimal drainage apparatus. This system is responsible for draining tears from the surface of the eye into the nasal cavity. Dacryography is performed by introducing a contrast dye into the lacrimal puncta, which are small openings located at the inner corner of the eyelids. The contrast material then flows through the canaliculi, the lacrimal sac, and the nasolacrimal duct.

Radiographic images, such as X-rays or fluoroscopy, are taken as the dye travels through these structures. This allows physicians to identify blockages, narrowing, or other abnormalities within the tear drainage system. Common indications for dacryography include excessive tearing (epiphora), recurrent infections of the tear sac (dacryocystitis), or suspected congenital blockages in infants. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, though some mild discomfort or temporary blurred vision may occur. The results of dacryography help guide treatment decisions, which can range from conservative management to surgical interventions.
