DRAMvälimuisti, or DRAM cache, refers to a small amount of high-speed dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) that is used to temporarily store frequently accessed data. This cache is typically integrated into devices such as graphics cards or solid-state drives to improve performance by reducing the need to access slower main memory.

The purpose of a DRAM cache is to act as a buffer. When data is requested, the system first checks the cache. If the data is present (a cache hit), it can be retrieved very quickly, significantly speeding up operations. If the data is not in the cache (a cache miss), the system must then access the slower main storage, which takes longer. The cache then stores a copy of this data, anticipating that it might be needed again soon.

The effectiveness of a DRAM cache depends on several factors, including its size and its caching algorithm, which determines which data is kept and which is discarded. Larger caches can hold more data, increasing the probability of cache hits, but they also consume more power and space. Sophisticated algorithms are designed to predict data access patterns to maximize efficiency.

In graphics cards, DRAM cache is often referred to as VRAM cache and is used to store textures, frame buffer data, and other graphics-related information. In solid-state drives, it serves a similar purpose for frequently accessed blocks of data from the NAND flash memory. Overall, DRAM cache is a critical component in modern hardware for enhancing speed and responsiveness.
