DOCSIS, which stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, is a set of technical standards that enable high-speed data transmission over the coaxial cable infrastructure typically used for cable television. Developed and maintained by CableLabs, DOCSIS allows cable operators to deliver broadband internet services to homes and businesses alongside their traditional TV offerings.

The standard works by utilizing radio frequency channels within the cable network, segregating data traffic from television signals. DOCSIS modems, located at the subscriber's premises, communicate with a cable modem termination system (CMTS) located at the cable operator's headend. This bidirectional communication allows for the download and upload of data.

Over the years, DOCSIS has seen several iterations, each introducing significant improvements in speed and efficiency. DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 laid the groundwork, while DOCSIS 2.0 enhanced upstream speeds. DOCSIS 3.0 introduced channel bonding, allowing multiple frequency channels to be aggregated for much higher downstream and upstream throughput. The latest major version, DOCSIS 3.1, further refines this by utilizing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and advanced coding techniques, enabling gigabit speeds and preparing the network for future demands. This evolution has been crucial in making cable internet a competitive broadband technology.
