DNSjärjestelmässä refers to the Domain Name System (DNS) in Finnish. It is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. The DNS translates human-readable domain names, like www.example.com, into numerical IP addresses (e.g., 192.0.2.1) that computers use to identify each other. This translation process is essential for navigating the internet.

When a user types a domain name into their web browser, their computer queries a DNS resolver. This resolver then initiates a series of requests to DNS servers to find the corresponding IP address. The DNS hierarchy is structured in a tree-like fashion, with root name servers at the top, followed by top-level domains (TLDs) like .com, .org, or country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) like .fi. Below these are the second-level domains, and so on.

The DNS is crucial for the functioning of the internet. Without it, users would have to remember the IP addresses of every website they wanted to visit, which is impractical. DNS also plays a role in other internet services, such as email delivery, by mapping domain names to mail exchange (MX) records. The system is designed to be resilient, with distributed servers and caching mechanisms to ensure speed and reliability.
