DIN51130

DIN 51130 is a German standard published by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) that specifies a method for determining the slip resistance of floor surfaces used indoors. The standard applies to a wide range of floor coverings and finished floorings, including ceramic tiles, natural stone, concrete, wood, and synthetic materials, in new or existing installations where slip resistance is a safety concern.

Test method: Slip resistance is measured using a pendulum device with a standardized rubber slider. The pendulum strikes the floor surface under controlled conditions, and the friction path is translated into a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). Tests are performed under prescribed dry and/or wet conditions to simulate real-world hazards. Multiple measurements may be taken to obtain an average value.

Classification: Surfaces are assigned to slip resistance classes R9, R10, R11, R12, or R13 based on the PTV. Higher classes correspond to greater resistance to slipping. The R-class labels are commonly used in specifications and safety labeling to indicate suitability for particular environments, with higher risk areas typically requiring higher classes (for example, wet areas).

Implementation and interpretation: The standard outlines sample preparation, apparatus setup, environmental conditions, testing procedures, and reporting of results. It provides guidance on how to interpret PTV and R-class values for design, procurement, and compliance. DIN 51130 is primarily used in Germany but has influenced harmonization efforts within the European context; the pendulum test method is now incorporated into European standards such as EN 13036-4.
