DICOMFormats

DICOMFormats refers to the various ways Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data can be structured and exchanged. DICOM is a standard for handling, storing, printing, and transmitting information in medical imaging. While the core DICOM standard defines a rich set of attributes and pixel data for images, how this information is physically represented and transmitted can vary.

One common format is the DICOM File Format, which embeds all necessary metadata and pixel data within a single file. These files typically have a .dcm extension. Another prevalent format is DICOMdir, which acts as a directory of DICOM files, often used on optical media like CDs or DVDs for distributing multiple images. It contains a master file and index files that point to the individual DICOM files.

Beyond these file-based representations, DICOM also defines network services for the exchange of imaging information. This involves specific communication protocols and message types, allowing DICOM systems (like modalities, PACS servers, and workstations) to interact. The way data is compressed and encoded within a DICOM file or during network transmission also contributes to its format. Various compression techniques, both lossless and lossy, can be employed to manage file size. Understanding these different DICOMFormats is crucial for ensuring interoperability between diverse medical imaging equipment and software.
