DEXAtutkimus, also known as DEXA scan or dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, is a non-invasive imaging test used primarily to measure bone mineral density. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weakened bones that are more prone to fractures.

The DEXA scan works by using two different X-ray beams, each with a different energy level, to penetrate bone and soft tissue. By analyzing how much of each X-ray beam is absorbed by the body, the scanner can determine the density of the bone. This allows for a precise measurement of bone mineral content.

The scan typically takes a short time, usually around 10 to 20 minutes, and is performed while the patient lies on a table. The most common areas examined are the hip and the spine, as these are common sites for fractures related to osteoporosis. In some cases, other areas like the forearm may also be scanned.

DEXA scans are recommended for individuals at higher risk of osteoporosis, including postmenopausal women, older men, and people who have experienced certain medical conditions or are taking medications that can affect bone health. The results of a DEXA scan help healthcare providers assess fracture risk and guide treatment decisions, such as recommending lifestyle changes or prescribing medications to strengthen bones.
