DDRGenerationen

DDRGenerationen is a term used in German-language historical and sociological discourse to describe generational cohorts associated with the German Democratic Republic (DDR). It is not an official demographic category, but a descriptive label employed by researchers, archivists, and museums to group people who lived through the DDR era (1949–1990) and its subsequent social, political, and cultural aftereffects.

The DDR shaped generation boundaries through state schooling, employment policies, youth organizations such as the Free German Youth, and the political socialization that accompanied daily life in a socialist state. Distinct experiences are often identified for those who grew up in the postwar years, those who came of age during the 1960s–1970s, and individuals who faced reunification as adolescents or adults. Events such as the construction of the Berlin Wall, the security apparatus of the Stasi, and the eventual transition of 1989–1990 frequently mark turning points in discussions of DDRGenerationen.
