During the late medieval period it developed a guild-based economy centered on textiles, glassware, and metalwork. The town endured several sieges in the 14th and 15th centuries and later formed part of a regional confederation. In the 19th century it modernized with rail access and public utilities, while retaining medieval street patterns.

Economy and culture: The economy remains diversified, with textiles, ceramics, and small-scale metalsmithing forming the traditional base. Twice-yearly markets draw traders from neighboring towns. The cultural life centers on a harvest festival, a bilingual local dialect, and a guild system that preserves crafts and apprenticeship.

Landmarks: Notable sites include the Old Market Gate, the University of Célszer, the Clock Mill, and the Celest Tower, which houses a small observatory.
