The term is derived from the Greek words "kytos" meaning cell and "toxikon," meaning poison. Cytotoksiner can be found naturally in various organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms.

Toxic proteins are a type of cytotoksiner found in certain plants and animals, including certain species of bacteria and insects. These proteins are designed to kill or harm other organisms, and are often used for defense purposes. For example, the sarcotoxin I protein found in the caterpillar of the deathstalker spider is highly toxic to other insects.

In medicine, cytotoksiner have been used in cancer therapy to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Chemicals such as doxorubicin and daunorubicin are examples of anthracycline antibiotics used in this context. Researchers have been studying the use of tumor-targeting peptides and proteins to selectively induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
