CytochromP450Monooxygenasen
Cytochromes P450 (CYPs) are a superfamily of enzymes found in all domains of life. They are monooxygenases, meaning they catalyze the transfer of one oxygen atom from molecular oxygen to a substrate, resulting in the oxidation of the substrate. This process typically involves a heme prosthetic group within the enzyme's active site. CYPs play crucial roles in a vast array of metabolic processes, including the biosynthesis and breakdown of various endogenous compounds, as well as the metabolism of xenobiotics, such as drugs and environmental toxins.
The Cytochrome P450 family is extremely diverse, with many different genes encoding for numerous CYP isoforms.
