Csontveljét

Csontveljét is the Hungarian word for bone marrow. It refers to the soft, fatty tissue found inside bones. There are two main types of bone marrow: red bone marrow and yellow bone marrow. Red bone marrow is primarily responsible for producing blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Yellow bone marrow, on the other hand, is mainly composed of fat cells.

In human anatomy, significant amounts of red bone marrow are found in the pelvis, sternum, ribs, vertebrae, and skull. As individuals age, the proportion of red bone marrow decreases, and it is gradually replaced by yellow bone marrow, particularly in the long bones.

Bone marrow is a vital component of the hematopoietic and immune systems. Its production of blood cells is a continuous process crucial for oxygen transport, immune defense, and blood clotting. Disorders affecting bone marrow can lead to various hematological conditions, such as anemia, leukemia, and lymphoma.

Culinary traditions in some cultures incorporate bone marrow, often referred to as "marrow bones," as a delicacy. It can be roasted or simmered and is known for its rich, buttery texture and flavor. Nutritionally, bone marrow is high in fat and contains some protein and vitamins. Medical applications of bone marrow include bone marrow transplants, a life-saving procedure for certain blood disorders and cancers.
