Csontizomsejtekre refers to osteoclasts, which are large multinucleated cells responsible for bone resorption. These cells are crucial for bone remodeling, a continuous process where old bone tissue is broken down and replaced with new bone tissue. Osteoclasts are derived from hematopoietic stem cells, specifically from the monocyte-macrophage lineage. Their formation and activity are tightly regulated by various signaling pathways and cytokines, including RANKL, M-CSF, and OPG.

The primary function of osteoclasts is to break down the mineralized matrix of bone. They achieve this by adhering to the bone surface and forming a sealed compartment called a resorption lacuna. Within this lacuna, osteoclasts secrete acids, primarily hydrochloric acid, to dissolve the mineral component of bone, and enzymes, such as cathepsin K, to degrade the organic matrix (collagen). The products of this resorption are then released into the bloodstream.

Imbalances in osteoclast activity can lead to various bone diseases. Overactive osteoclasts contribute to conditions like osteoporosis, where bone mass is reduced, and osteopetrosis, characterized by dense but brittle bones. Conversely, reduced osteoclast activity can impair bone healing and remodeling. Understanding the mechanisms regulating osteoclast differentiation and function is therefore essential for developing therapeutic strategies for bone-related disorders.
