Cryovessels

Cryovessels are specialized containers designed for the cryogenic storage of biological materials. They are engineered to maintain extremely low temperatures, typically ranging from -150°C to -196°C, which is cold enough to preserve cells, tissues, and other biological samples for extended periods. This process, known as cryopreservation, halts biological activity, preventing degradation and maintaining the viability of the stored material.

The construction of cryovessels is crucial for their function. They often utilize vacuum insulation, similar to a thermos flask, to minimize heat transfer from the environment. The inner and outer walls are separated by a vacuum space, and multiple layers of reflective material may be incorporated to further reduce radiative heat transfer. Common materials for cryovessels include stainless steel or aluminum alloys, chosen for their durability and ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

Cryovessels come in various sizes and designs, from small laboratory dewars holding a few liters of liquid nitrogen to large-scale storage units capable of housing thousands of samples. They are essential tools in a wide range of fields, including fertility preservation (sperm, eggs, embryos), research laboratories for storing cell lines and biological specimens, and in clinical settings for storing blood products and other biological therapies. The safe and effective operation of cryovessels relies on a consistent supply of cryogen, most commonly liquid nitrogen, and careful handling procedures to prevent frostbite and ensure sample integrity.
