Crotales

Crotales are a percussion instrument consisting of a set of small, tuned cymbals, typically made of brass. They are similar to a small glockenspiel or metallophone but produce a brighter, more metallic sound. The cymbals are usually mounted on a wooden frame or rack, allowing them to be struck individually with mallets. Crotales are often used in orchestral music, chamber ensembles, and film scores to add a shimmering, ethereal, or bell-like quality to the sound.

The name "crotales" is derived from the Greek word "krotalon," meaning rattle or castanet, though their construction and sound are distinct from those instruments. They are played by striking the individual cymbals with mallets, which can range in hardness depending on the desired tone. Softer mallets produce a warmer, more sustained sound, while harder mallets yield a brighter, sharper attack. The tuning of crotales allows them to be used melodically, often playing arpeggios or short melodic phrases. Their range is typically limited, but they are valued for their unique timbre and ability to create a sense of clarity and brilliance. Crotales are a relatively modern invention, with their development gaining prominence in the early 20th century.
