The name draws on the French verb croître ("to grow"), with croissent serving as the third-person plural present tense form, a nod to the plants’ supposed vigorous growth.

They have simple, serrated leaves and produce flowers with five petals, typically pale pink or white, arranged in small clusters. The fruit is a fleshy drupe or pome, depending on the species, and can be tart or mildly sweet when ripe.

Distribution and habitat: In the fictional setting Verdania, Croissent is native to temperate hillside woodlands and stream banks, favoring moist, well-drained soils and partial shade. They are adapted to cool summers and distinct seasonal rainfall.
