Crestaområdet is a geographical term used in several Nordic and European contexts to describe a mountain ridge area characterized by elongated crests, exposed rock faces and high-altitude terrain.

Topography: The landscape typically consists of narrow, knife-edge ridges that run along the crest of mountain chains, with steep drop-offs on both sides and frequent passes and viewpoints.

Geology: Such ridges are formed by differential erosion and tectonic uplift; resistant rock layers remain as crests while surrounding valleys are eroded; glaciation over time creates features like arêtes and horns.

Climate and ecology: The high exposure leads to harsh weather and strong winds; vegetation is sparse and mainly alpine grasses, lichens and mosses; animal life includes adapted species such as ibex, chamois or rock ptarmigan.

Human use and conservation: Crestaområden are popular for hiking, mountaineering, and cross-border long-distance trails; routes require preparedness for sudden weather changes and exposure.
