CpGstrecken refers to the stretches of DNA in an organism's genome that are rich in CpG dinucleotides. A CpG dinucleotide is a sequence of cytosine (C) followed immediately by guanine (G) in the 5' to 3' direction. These sequences are particularly interesting in molecular biology and genetics due to their unique biological roles and patterns of occurrence.

In vertebrate genomes, CpG dinucleotides are significantly underrepresented compared to their expected frequency based on base composition. This is largely due to the fact that unmethylated cytosine in a CpG dinucleotide can spontaneously deaminate to become thymine (T). If this deamination occurs in the DNA, the resulting C to T transition can be recognized and repaired by cellular mechanisms, but if the cytosine is methylated, the repair mechanisms may not be as efficient, leading to an accumulation of T's at these sites over evolutionary time. Methylation of cytosine at CpG sites is a crucial epigenetic modification that plays a significant role in gene regulation.

However, certain regions of the genome maintain a high density of CpG dinucleotides, defying this general depletion. These regions are known as CpG islands or CpG-rich stretches. CpG islands are often found in or near the promoter regions of genes, which are the sequences that control gene expression. The methylation status of CpG islands within gene promoters is strongly correlated with gene activity; unmethylated CpG islands are typically associated with active genes, while methylated CpG islands are often found in silenced genes. Therefore, the study of CpGstrecken is vital for understanding gene regulation, epigenetic mechanisms, and the development of diseases like cancer, where aberrant DNA methylation patterns are common.
