Coupons may be subject to restrictions such as minimum purchase amounts, item exclusions, category limitations, or one-time-use rules. Many programs also limit coupon applicability to specific brands, products, or geographic regions. Some coupons can be stacked with other promotions depending on retailer policy; others block stacking.

The order of application varies by jurisdiction and retailer policy. In most cases, the discount is applied to the subtotal before tax, with tax calculated on the discounted amount. Shipping costs may be unaffected or reduced by the coupon, depending on policy.

Retailers often enforce expiration dates, usage limits, and maximum discount caps. Some customers encounter issues such as regional restrictions, insufficient balance, or invalid codes, which require customer support.
