Counterspell

Counterspell is a term used in various fantasy games and media to describe the act of negating another spell or magical effect. It is most commonly associated with Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, though similar concepts appear in other games and settings.

In Magic: The Gathering, Counterspell is a blue instant card with a mana cost of two blue mana (UU). Its text reads “Counter target spell.” The card counters a spell as it is cast, preventing it from resolving. Counterspell has long been a cornerstone of blue control strategies and has appeared in many printings and reprint cycles since the game's early sets, influencing format dynamics and deck design.

In Dungeons & Dragons, Counterspell is a 4th-level spell from the Abjuration school in the 5th edition rules. It requires a reaction to cast, with a range of 60 feet. If a creature within range begins to cast a spell of 3rd level or lower, Counterspell automatically counters it. For spells of 4th level and higher, you must succeed on a spellcasting ability check (DC 10 + the spell’s level) to counter the spell. If successful, the target spell is countered; if you fail, the spell resolves normally. The spell is a common defensive option for spellcasters, and its precise mechanics vary across editions.

Beyond these, the term appears in other games and media as a general mechanism to interrupt or negate magical effects.
