Coridothymus

Coridothymus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae, commonly known as the mint family. It contains a single species, Coridothymus capitatus. This species is native to the Mediterranean region, found in countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and North Africa. It is a small, aromatic shrub typically growing to a height of around 30 to 60 centimeters.

The leaves of Coridothymus capitatus are small, ovate, and arranged in opposite pairs along the stems. They are known for their strong, thyme-like fragrance, due to the presence of essential oils. The plant produces small, white to pale purple flowers that are borne in dense, terminal heads. These flower heads are often conspicuous and are a characteristic feature of the species. The flowering period usually occurs from late spring through summer.

Coridothymus capitatus thrives in arid or semi-arid conditions, preferring well-drained soils and full sun exposure. It is often found growing in rocky areas, garrigue, and maquis shrublands. Due to its aromatic properties and attractive flowers, it has been used traditionally in some regions for medicinal purposes and as an ornamental plant. The plant is ecologically significant, providing habitat and nectar for local insect populations. Its resilience to drought and poor soils makes it well-adapted to its Mediterranean habitat.
