Cooptilation

Cooptilation is a term that describes the process by which an organization or entity absorbs or integrates a dissenting or oppositional group into its own structure or agenda. This integration often serves to neutralize the threat posed by the dissenting group or to co-opt their ideas and energy for the benefit of the larger entity. Cooptilation can occur through various means, including offering leadership positions, financial incentives, or incorporating some of the dissenting group's demands into the established system.

The term suggests a subtle form of control, where the dominant entity appears to be accommodating or inclusive, while in reality, it is gaining influence over and diminishing the independent power of the oppositional group. This can lead to the dilution of the original goals of the dissenting group or a shift in their focus to align with the co-opting entity. The effectiveness of cooptilation lies in its ability to pacify or marginalize opposition without resorting to overt force or suppression. It can be a strategy employed by governments, corporations, or other established institutions facing challenges from grassroots movements, activist organizations, or internal dissent.
