Connotationneutral (also spelled connotation‑neutral) is an adjective referring to words, expressions or linguistic forms that convey a purely descriptive or factual meaning without evoke affective or evaluative associations. In semantics, the concept contrasts with connotative language where a word carries cultural, emotional or subjective overtones. Connotationneutral usage is advocated in contexts such as scientific reporting, legal drafting, and technical documentation to minimise bias and ambiguity.

Historically, the term emerged in the early 21st century within the fields of linguistics and computational natural language processing. Researchers sought to quantify “neutrality” and develop algorithms that detect and replace connotative vocabulary in policy documents, news articles and corporate communications. The concept has influenced style guides, particularly in journalism and public policy, encouraging editors to favor lexical choices that are judged as “connotationneutral.”
