Connectivitat

Connectivitat, in Catalan scholarly and public discourse, refers to the quality or state of being connected. It describes the capacity of systems—physical, digital, social or ecological—to exchange information, energy or matter and to maintain interactions across space and time. The concept is applied across disciplines to assess how well components of a network are linked and how easily they can function as a whole.

Etymology: connectivitat derives from Latin connectivitas, via French connectivité, adapted to Catalan spelling. In academic and planning contexts it is used as the standard term for connectivity in Catalan-language texts.

Domains: Transport and infrastructure connectivitat refers to roads, railways, ports and airports; digital connectivitat to internet access and information networks; social connectivitat to mobility, inclusion and social cohesion; ecological connectivitat to the permeability of landscapes for species movement; and neural connectivitat to patterns of connections between brain regions.

Measurement and planning: connectivitat is assessed with network metrics such as path length, degree, betweenness and clustering in abstract networks; transport analysts use accessibility indices and travel-time distances; ecologists apply habitat-connectivity indices; neuroscientists use imaging techniques to map structural and functional connectivity. Policy aims include reducing isolation, strengthening resilience and promoting sustainable development.

In practice, higher connectivitat is associated with economic activity, information exchange and resilience, while gaps in connectivitat can create marginalization or vulnerability. The term is used in urban planning, regional development, neuroscience and ecology to evaluate and improve linkages within complex systems.
