Compõe

Compõe is the third-person singular present indicative form of the Portuguese verb compor. The verb, in its broad sense, means to compose, to put together, or to constitute, and it is used in contexts ranging from music and poetry to assembling groups or elements. The word derives from Latin componere, meaning to place together.

In the present tense, the full conjugation of compor includes: eu componho, tu compones, ele compõe, nós compomos, vós compõem, eles compõem. The forms compõe and compõem carry accent marks to indicate the stressed syllable and reflect the verb’s irregular spelling in the present tense.

Usage and meaning:

- Transitive sense: compor something, for example: Ele compõe uma canção. The verb can refer to creating works of music, poetry, or literature, as well as arranging or organizing things more generally.

- Constitutive sense: compor something means to form or make up its parts. For instance: O grupo compõe o elenco da peça.

- Reflexive construction to express composition: compõe-se de, meaning “is composed of” or “consists of.” Example: O prato compõe-se de arroz, feijão e carne.

Notes:

- Compôs-se de é a forma passada correspondente, and comporia-se de would express a hypothetical or conditional composition.

- In both Brazilian and European Portuguese, compor and its форм compõe are standard and widely used; compõe is primarily the present tense form used with ele/ela.
