Compostoituvasta is a Finnish term referring to compostable materials. These are substances that can break down naturally through the process of composting, returning to the earth without leaving behind harmful residues. Compostable items are typically derived from organic sources, such as plant matter, food scraps, and biodegradable plastics certified for composting. The decomposition process is facilitated by microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, which consume the organic material under suitable conditions of moisture, oxygen, and temperature.

For a material to be considered truly compostable, it must meet specific standards and certifications. In Europe, the EN 13432 standard is widely recognized, outlining criteria for biodegradability, disintegration, and ecotoxicity. Products meeting this standard will break down within a specified timeframe in an industrial composting facility, leaving no visible or toxic remnants. Home compostable products may have different, less stringent requirements, designed for the lower temperatures and slower decomposition rates found in backyard compost bins.

The use of compostable materials offers an alternative to conventional plastics and reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills. By diverting organic waste and compostable packaging from general waste streams, it contributes to a more circular economy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill decomposition. Proper disposal is crucial, as compostable items must be directed to appropriate composting facilities, whether industrial or home, to realize their environmental benefits. Contamination of recycling streams with compostable materials can hinder the recycling process.
