Coleopteridae
Coleopteridae is a proposed taxonomic family of insects. The name Coleopteridae has been used historically to refer to what is now known as the order Coleoptera, which comprises the beetles. However, Coleopteridae is not currently recognized as a valid family-level taxon within the established classification of insects. Modern entomological classification places beetles within the order Coleoptera, which is a very large and diverse group. Within Coleoptera, numerous families are recognized, such as Carabidae (ground beetles), Staphylinidae (rove beetles), Scarabaeidae (scarab beetles), and Curculionidae (weevils), among many others. The term Coleopteridae, if encountered in older literature, likely refers to the beetles as a whole or a very broad, now obsolete, grouping. The current consensus in entomology is to use the order Coleoptera for beetles and to define specific families based on detailed morphological and genetic characteristics. The study of beetles, known as coleopterology, is a significant branch of entomology due to the sheer number of beetle species.
