Codomene

Codomene is a term that appears in mathematical and linguistic contexts, but it is not the standard English term for a core concept in most modern mathematics. In English usage, the corresponding and widely accepted word is codomain. The form codomene may be encountered as an older, regional, or translational variant in some texts, or as a mistranscription, rather than as a distinct mathematical concept.

In mathematics, a function f from a set X to a set Y is written as f: X → Y. The set Y is called the codomain of f, while the actual image of f, consisting of all outputs f(x) as x ranges over X, is a subset of Y and is sometimes called the range. The distinction between codomain and image is important: the image depends on the particular rule of the function, whereas the codomain is part of the function’s definition and is independent of the mapping itself.

Examples help illustrate the idea. If f: R → R is defined by f(x) = x^2, the codomain is R, but the image is [0, ∞). If g: {1, 2} → {a, b} maps 1 → a and 2 → a, the codomain is {a, b} while the image is {a}.

Outside mathematics, codomene does not denote a widely recognized substance, organism, or object in standard nomenclature. When encountered, its meaning is usually clarified by context or by substitution with codomain or target set.
